Chandler’s 2nd Annual Halloween
It’s been a few days and the candy buzz is finally starting to wear off and I think I’m finally ready to submit my report on Chandler’s second annual Halloween. That’s right, in the Smith family we celebrate Halloween annually.
Previously I posted a picture of Chandler and I in our Halloween costumes and asked if you could guess what we were. Dimavovaforever was lightning fast to respond with the correct answer of Calvin and Hobbes. Dima, you have my respect. To the rest of you…better luck next time. But a lot of you did get it right, which is more than I can say about my neighbors. Most of them just thought Chandler was Tigger. Psshh! That was SO last year, and totally different! See!

And this is what we looked like this year.

Most of the time we just let people go on assuming he was Tigger. We didn’t want to get too intense about it.
Them: Oh, he is such a cute Tigger!
Us: NO! Actually he is Hobbes! As in Calvin and! Maybe you should think before you speak!
But at some of the houses, particularly the ones closer to home where were meeting some of our new neighbors for the first time, Ashley felt compelled to intervene.
Ashley: Hi, we just moved into the neighborhood. I’m Ashley and this is my husband Nate and our son Chandler. They are Calvin and Hobbes. My husband doesn’t normally dress like this, and his hair usually looks better…not a lot better…but a little better.
Chandler was of course A.DOR.ABLE! I on the other hand looked like Calvin was going through a particularly tough puberty stage. Next year we’ll have to come up with a costume that is a little less accidentally scary. Someone already suggested the brilliant idea of us going as a Mt Dew 2 Liter Bottle and 12 oz Can. Brilliant. I plan on teaming up with Chandler for Halloween costumes until that fateful day comes that he no longer thinks it is cool. And next year we have to get Mom involved.
Trick or treating this year was definitely more fun than last year. It was my idea to use the red wagon as both a costume prop and a great way to keep Chandler engaged and moving in the right direction. Chandler is very mobile these days, but not very focused. He loved the wagon and except for the fact that he kept throwing things out of it all night long, it was a pretty smooth ride.

It was fun to watch Chandler as the night went on and he eventually started to catch on. His favorite portion of the evening was pressing the doorbells. I think this might be foreshadowing his ding dong ditching days. But after a while he learned that the next step in the process was to receive candy, and after ringing the doorbells he would hold out his little hand. At the beginning of the night, if the neighbors held out the bowl for him to choose his candy, he would just stare at them with an untrusting look. Who taught my son not to take candy from strangers? Chandler, if a stranger wants to give you free candy, and possibly even a free ride in a cool windowless van, well then son you better take them up on that. How many times are you going to get an opportunity like that?
Towards the end he started reaching into the bowls and choosing his own treats. There were a few close calls when he almost grabbed some Whoppers. As soon as he is old enough to understand, we are going to have to engage in some serious candy education.
Here is this year’s haul:

Pretty paltry by my standards but not bad for the little guy’s 2nd year. It is safe to assume that by the time this post is published that candy will have been consumed by yours truly.
