Making a career change while being a father

This year has been full of changes for me. My wife had a baby. The US has its first ever black President. It’s the last season of LOST. You know…monumental life changing events. But it had been a few months since something huge and life altering had happened so I decided to go ahead and shake things up.

So I switched careers. No big deal. Right?

I’ve never officially talked about my job here on IF because…it was FORBIDDEN. But they don’t own me anymore! So I can say whatever I want!

Sorry for that little outburst. For the last three years I’ve worked for Apple in their retail stores. I started as a Specialist (salesperson) and worked my way up to Lead Specialist, a Mentor and trainer for 3 different stores, and worked as an interim manager for a short while.

You may have heard that Apple has a penchant for secrecy. I can confirm that. For the last three years I have not been allowed to discuss anything Apple related on the internet. Besides my facebook profile which listed Apple as my employer, I have not mentioned my job at Apple, nor have I commented on products, policies, or other people’s reviews of Apple.

Now I can. I have nothing but good things to say about Apple. And I’ll get around to saying them at some point. I might even start a separate blog devoted to the topic of Apple and related technology. If that interests you, keep your eyes peeled.

But now I’m moving on to something totally new and different. By different I mean almost completely opposite. At Apple I was on my feet all day long working on Macs talking to customers. At my new job I’ll be sitting at a desk all day working on a PC and will have no direct contact with customers of any kind. The only similarity between the two jobs is that once again I am not allowed to talk about this job online.

I am really going to miss Apple. The amazing people I worked for. The innovative products and super exciting product launches. The discounts. (Sigh) But this new job will be exciting and challenging. Also it will come with some perks that will benefit my family. Mainly a schedule that will allow me to be home on nights and weekends.

WEEKENDS! Besides holidays, I haven’t had a weekend day off in almost 3 years. I actually had a slightly emotional moment as I came home one day. It was a warm day and I just pictured Chandler and I going outside on Saturdays and playing catch. I can’t wait!

And nights! Now that I won’t be working til 8 or 9 several nights a week I’ll have more time to play with Chandler before he goes to bed. This will also free me up to perform at the Curious Comedy Theater more often. So that’s exciting.

All in all I think this career change is going to mean a lot of good things for me and my family. Hopefully it will give me more time to play with Chandler and in turn give me even more to write about.
