Talking to Chandler about the birds, bees, and other things

In this installment of “Father Knows Best?” I will have heart-to-heart talk with Dr. Rod from www.thenormalmale.wordpress.com.

Ok Nate…here goes…you and I are a bit different…you funny…me a tad serious….Have you thought of how you are going to have serious conversations with your son when he is older without comedy? I ask because so many boys are not used to heart-to-heart conversations with their dad’s and often atta-boys and comedy are used instead. Would love to know your thoughts on how you plan to balance comedy and friendship with fathering. ThanksĀ

Alright Doc Rod (can I call you Doc Rod?), that’s a good question. I think the key to your question was the “without comedy” part. You see D-Rod, there’s not much I do in life that doesn’t involve comedy. I live my life as if it is one big sitcom. A good example of this is that I wear pretty much the same outfit everyday. And whenever I come up with a clever zinger I look right into the camera and give my best smile.

I’m not sure how serious I’ll ever be. When I have heart to heart talks with Chandler, I think they will have the same tone as the movie City Slickers. Remember that movie? It had a great message. In the end you learned a valuable lesson. But along the way you sure had a lot of laughs. That’s how I want my talks to go. Also, I’d like Billy Crystal to give the talks for me.

When I think back to my childhood, I don’t remember having the cliche’ father-son talks. I never learned about the birds and the bees, and my father never talked to me about sex either (ZING! And now I’m looking into the camera). Somehow I turned out all right. Well, maybe not all right. But at the very least, alright.

But I don’t want you to worry, Doc Rod. I know how important it is for young boys to learn how to express their emotions. If there is one thing I am good at it’s expressing my emotions. I’ll cry about just about anything. Paper cuts send me into hysterics and yesterday I found an episode of My Little Pony on Youtube that had me weeping for hours.

Are my son and I going to have good heart to heart talks? I think so. Are they going to be completely devoid of jokes. Doubtful. But don’t worry DRod, I think my son will turn out to be alright.
