Swim Class

As I start this post I realize we already have our son going to regular music classes and swimming classes. He’s 4 and half months old. Are we those parents who start filling out registration forms for pre-school years before the child is old enough to attend?

The point of swim class is to get the baby acclimated to water at an early age so that there is never a traumatic swimming experience at a later age. It makes a lot of sense until you realize it’s the same logic used by parents who let their kids have a little bit of beer every now and then.

Tonight was our second night at class. It was a big night. Tonight we put Chandler’s face under water. We had been preparing for it all week. The teacher gave us a verbal cue to use with him. During his bath time we would occasionally say, “Ready, go,” and then blow air in his face right before pouring some water over his head. Blowing in his face was suppose to cause him to hold his breath.

So tonight we came with our game faces on. As we got out of the car I said, “Chandler’s going to be a Navy Seal some day.” Mommy didn’t like this. In fact Mommy doesn’t seem to like any of the possible job prospects in Chandler’s future. I’ve said he’s going to be a Cop on the SWAT team, a Bull rider, and a unicycling chainsaw juggler. Seems like Ashley just wants Chandler to grow up to be a couch potato.

Anyway, Chandler handled his first dunk under water like a champ. The teacher even said he had “a good face,” and she could tell he was going to be good at this. That’s my boy! Look at that face! It was made for under water. Maybe someday Chandler will grow up to be an international spy who is exceptionally good at withstanding water boarding torture. What do you say Mom?
