The First 30 Days
Ashley and I have had our little bundle of joy for 30 days now. That’s it, there’s no going back. We’ve passed the return date. And why would we return him? He’s awesome! But I think people call babies “bundles of joy” because they come bundled with other things such as anger, tears, and poops. But the overall package has been exactly what we hoped for.
The experience so far has been…invigorating. It’s a lot like playing a new video game. You have a whole new set of skills to learn. Sometimes the controls just don’t seem to make sense. Other times they don’t seem to work at all. “I pushed the right button! Why didn’t it work?” Then you get so frustrated that you feel like throwing the game out the window. But you don’t, because you love that new game. Instead you put it down (gently) and let Mommy play for a while. And you laugh at her when she can’t beat it either.
Most video games can be beat simply by studying the game and looking for all the patterns. Once you figure that out, you can almost beat the game blindfolded. Ashley is big on tracking Chandler’s patterns.
“This is the time when he should be feeding so he will then fall back asleep.”
“I’m worried. He should be awake now so he’ll sleep later tonight.”
But this game is one of those new age games with a built in artificial intelligence that senses when you’ve figured out the pattern and then changes it all up just to mess with you. We almost went to a movie for the first time since he was born the other night. We were going to let him hang out with his Grandparents. But then he hadn’t eaten at his normal interval and based on the patterns he was going to be fussy and need to be fed midway through the movie. So we stayed home. We stayed home with a baby that was perfectly calm for about 3 hours.
Sometimes I think Chandler can understand what we are saying and chooses to do the opposite of what we guess he is going to do. He is totally messing with us! Well I’m going to start keeping a list of all the things he has done to mess with me, and then when he is older…say…high school age…I’m going to get him back for each one.
It’s ON Chandler! Bring it!
Now I’m going to go play some actual video games.
