Waiting for a Delivery

Well we did it. We made a baby. It’s on its way. Now we just wait. Well, I just wait. Ashley, my wife, waits and grows. Having a baby is kind of like ordering a custom configuration computer online and then waiting for it to be shipped. Only in this case we’re not 100% sure what we ordered. We might be getting the blue model, but then again we might have ordered the pink model. It was late that night when we placed the order.
Now that we’ve placed the order it feels like we’re waiting for FedEx to deliver it. We’ve received notice that it is shipping but that it won’t be here for another few months. They say it will be here on August 15th but let’s face it, packages never arrive when they say they will. But every day we feel Ashley’s belly like it is a tracking number and we’re trying to get info on where our package is now. “Oh look honey, it moved. I think it’s going to be here soon.”
When people ask when the baby is due I think it is so odd that we give them an exact date. August 15th. We know that most likely the baby is not going to be here exactly on August 15th. But we don’t say mid August or something vague like that. We say “August 15th.” That date is on our calendar and and we’ve got a baby countdown app ticking away on our iPod Touch as we speak. We’ve already set our baby up with an opportunity to disappoint us. Don’t be late baby! We’ve been waiting a real long time! But don’t come too early either. We’ve made some plans and would really rather not move them around.
When people ask me when the baby is due, I like to say, “August 15th. 2pm.”
